The Interrobangs FAQ
These are the questions that would be frequently asked about The Interrobangs if people frequently asked questions about us. Got a question that isn’t covered here? Ask it!
1: What’s an ‘interrobang’?
An interrobang is basically a question mark and an exclamation mark mashed together. You can’t just write them side-by-side, though! The interrobang is a proper legit punctuation mark, like so: ‽
If you’re haunted by the suspicion that your sentences might be too boring, try ending them all with an interrobang. It’s fun!
2: How do I type an interrobang?
You go to Wikipedia’s Interrobang page and copy-paste it from there.
Oh, you want to know how to do it properly? Uh…we’ll get back to you on that one.
3: Why ‘The Interrobangs’?
History time!
You can blame one Pheobe North for getting this whole thing started. It was her idea to band together with some of her writer-friends in order to form a squad of crime-fighting vigilantes critique group of like-minded aspiring authors. There are many such groups out there on the internet. It can be enormously helpful to have somebody else read over your work in progress (or ‘WIP’), and who better to do that than another writer? As well as that, it can be helpful to be able to discuss the daily realities of writing a novel with somebody else who’s going through the same ups and downs that you most likely are.
Of course, every self-respecting group of writers needs an awesome name (it’s actually a law in some countries, or so I’m told). The interrobang profoundly captures our spirit of seriousness and curiosity mixed with humorous whimsy, and also it’s a very funny word when you pluralize it. Hence, The Interrobangs.
4: Why does my spell-check put red squiggly lines under the word ‘interrobang’?
Because your spell-check is WRONG.
5: What do you guys write?
Although we tend to enjoy a fairly broad range of fiction across the fictional spectrum, most of us are fairly passionate about Young Adult (YA) literature. For the uninitiated, YA as a publishing category includes books like The Hunger Games and The DUFF, among many others. It’s generally split between ‘genre’ YA fiction (SF, Fantasy, paranormal, that kind of thing) and ‘contemporary’ (stories set in the real world, usually focusing on more down-to-earth subject matter). We lean more heavily toward genre.
As for why we choose to write YA…well, that could make a good blog post at some point. At least one common reason is that, like many writers, we feel that YA allows for more flexibility within genre boundaries than ‘adult’ fiction. Sure, YA also has its own set of conventions and clichés, but they’re often not as rigid as you’d think.
